Propulsion Control System Display
A stopgap GUI for propeller pitch and RPM display units that kept ship control systems running through a spare-parts shortage.
Situation
Ship control systems were running short of spare parts for their propeller pitch and RPM display units. A stopgap was needed quickly, and it had to run reliably without limiting how the platform could scale later.
Task
Build a hardware-compatible display application that integrates with the existing ship control system, then get it into production and out to the field.
Action
- Set up the development toolchain for the Toradex-based hardware.
- Built the GUI application, including switching between operational modes.
- Added a logging mechanism so alarm logs can be retrieved for troubleshooting.
- Defined hardware validation, production and field processes, including log retrieval and board recovery, and documented them.
- Owned the full lifecycle and learned both the software and hardware sides along the way.
Result
- Delivered on schedule, with more functionality than the initial requirements.
- In production since 2023, with plans to scale for global deployment on tugboats, oil tankers and cargo ships.
- An easy-to-deploy application platform that improves resilience for critical ship control data.

A monitoring and control application for switching operating modes on hybrid vessels, deployed on one of Norway's largest tugboats.
Ship Data Logger
Upgraded the logger that records and transmits vessel operational data to Linux, and streamlined how it's built, tested and serviced.
